Manuscript completed: September 2002

Introduction:
Downward movement of ground materials on slope is called as landslide or slope instability (IAEG 1990). Topography, tectonic activities, seismicity and geological and climatological conditions of Iran, make this territory capable for occurring various types of landslides. For example, mountain slope of northern Tehran has good potential for landslide, due to closeness to an active fault system.

On Tuesday, 29 April 2004, at 16 (local time) a landslide occurred near the town of Karkonan-e-Majlis (the Islamic Parliament employees) at western side of Farahzad Valley, located in the 5th zone of Municipality of Tehran. After this event, NGDIR set up a research group to the area. Based on evaluation of existing data, it is suggested three sliding areas, which any urban development in the area should be returned to these results. In this research, also it is calculated the north Tehran fault rupture hazard zone in study area, which has the potential of direct rupturing for structures located in this zone. |
